British Chevening Scholarships

Mogadishu Fellowship

The fellowship, sponsored by the Reuters Foundation, acknowledges the role African photojournalists have played in the global media. It also specifically commemorates the memory of Dan Eldon, Anthony Macharia and Hos Maina of Reuters and Hansi Krauss of the Associated Press who were murdered by an enraged mob in the Somali capital of Mogadishu in 1993. Mogadishu Fellows will spend one term at the University of Cardiff’s School of Journalism to undertake individually tailored studies, followed by one or two weeks with the Reuters news pictures desk in London. Applicants must be African nationals under 35. Asia Media Forum Fellowships

Asian and Pacific journalists who want to improve their coverage of human rights in the region can apply for fellowships from the Asia Media Forum (AMF). Application deadlines are October 25 for print journalists and October 30 for broadcast journalists.
AMF is offering 20 fellowships for mid-career journalists. Each two-week fellowship includes US$2,000 for travel and other costs of living in reporting in another Asian country.
Fellows can report on themes such as education, food, health, justice or women’s rights, among others. AMF partners will help host the fellows in the country where they are assigned.
To apply, print journalists must send two original news features on rights and development, while broadcast journalists must send one documentary or TV report. AMF says it will use these reports as contributions to its Web site. Applicants also should send a CV, letter of interest, and an endorsement from an editor or manager.

The Association of Argentine Journalism Entities (ADEPA) organizes an annual competition for Argentine journalists, photographers, cartoonists, and graphic media. The ADEPA Awards recognize professional excellence in defense of press freedom and journalism that expresses society’s fundamental ethical values.

The Howard Chapnick Grant encourages and supports leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism, such as editing research, education, and management. Harry Chapin Media Awards

World Hunger Year created the Harry Chapin Media Awards, formerly the World Hunger Media Awards, in 1982 to encourage the media to “tell the story of hunger and poverty.” The Media Awards honor print and electronic media for their outstanding coverage that positively impacts hunger, poverty and self-reliance. The Media Awards also honor work that focuses on the causes of hunger and poverty and the forces creating self-reliance. This includes work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic and international policies and their reform, community empowerment, sustainable development, food production, agriculture, nutrition and the struggle for land.
A total of US$12,500 in awards are handed out in five media categories: newspaper; magazines; broadcast; photojournalism; books.

Esso Award for Journalism

This prize recognizes journalistic works written in Portuguese and published or broadcast by a Brazilian news agency that refer to people or events that took place within Brazil or that have immediate repercussions for the country, if they took place abroad. Esso, a part of the Exxon Mobile Oil Company, organizes the prize.
The categories considered for awards are: reporting, photojournalism, economic information, scientific, technological or ecological information, and front page news, among others. The total of 14 awards are given for the best example of either print or television journalism.
The prize total is BRL115,000 (about US$48,342) divided among the winners.

ACG Journalism Fellowship

Arthur F. Burns Fellowship

The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program grants ten U.S. and ten German journalists a $5,000 living stipend to live and work in each other’s countries and report to their home news organization for two months each year. Airfare and lodging in Washington, D.C. for a one-week orientation session in July are also included. U.S. participants will also be reimbursed up to US$500 in German-language courses.
The journalists will work part-time for a local newspaper, magazine, radio station or television station. The program is jointly administered by the International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C. and the Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) in Konigstein, Germany.

Advanced Professional Program for Journalists of Japan’s English-language Press

This three-week program, held each year in June, includes seminars, hands-on workshop sessions, assignments, professional appointments, and attachments at American newspapers and radio stations. The journalists, selected by NSK, convene in New York City for three days of assignments and professional appointments. The group then travels to Washington for an orientation session, two days of visits and appointments, and three days of intensive writing and reporting workshops. For the final phase of the program, journalists travel in pairs to newspapers throughout the United States for approximately 10 days. The full group reconvenes in San Francisco for a final meeting and evaluation before departing for home. The opportunity for these young reporters to be based in a U.S. newsroom and observe how their American colleagues work is the centerpiece of this program. Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship brings ten journalists ages 25 to 35 from countries with low levels of press freedom to the United States every year for a five-month fellowship at a U.S. newspaper. To be eligible, journalists must be working for a newspaper in a developing country, have at least three years’ experience in print journalism, and an excellent command of English. Fellows are encouraged to demonstrate willingness to drive, a proficiency using computers and a strong desire to return to work in their home country.
Applications are due August 15. In mid-March of the following year, the fellows begin their fellowship in Washington, DC with a two-week orientation session before they spread out to major and mid-sized American cities until September, when they return to Washington, DC for four days before returning to their home country.
The fellowship covers travel expenses to the United States, all travel related to the fellowship, housing, insurance, a monthly stipend for living expenses and assistance in obtaining the J-1 visas from the U.S. embassy in their home country.

Antorchas Foundation Scholarships

The Antorchas Foundation in collaboration with the Argentina Council for International Relations and the Fulbright Commission offers an 18-24 month scholarship designated for a university graduate continuing with journalistic activities and with the ability to express independent opinions. Priority will be granted to those whose previous credentials allow them to work in scientific journalism and who plan to support it.
The winner of the scholarship can opt to make a special program that is designed to satisfy his needs or he/she can follow the regular course in the United States that will lead to a master’s Degree in journalism (or something similar). They have not prepared an application form to request this scholarship, but if you are interested, send your requests along with the following detailed items:

Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy

The Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy is designed to further both the tradition of liberal journalism in Canada and the commitment to social and economic justice of Joseph E. Atkinson.
The Fellowship provides a grant for a Canadian journalist to undertake a year-long research project on topical public policy issue. While the Fellowship is interested in any number of topics, and is open to new and imaginative ideas for research, it favours issues that are in the forefront of public debate and have implications for Canadian society at large (e.g., poverty, unemployment, trade agreements, welfare, child care, etc.). The Fellowship will not consider projects in history, anthropology, literature, folklore and related areas.
The annual competition for the Atkinson Fellowship is open to all full-time Canadian journalists in print or broadcast media. Preference is given to those applicants who have already achieved some distinction in reporting on policy issues. The Fellowship is held for a one-year period (from September 1 to August 31) and is not renewable. The stipend is $75,000. A budget for research expenses up to $25,000 will also be considered. The Fellow will be expected to exclude other journalistic activities during this period.

AVINA Fellowships for Investigative Journalism

Media assistance and development NGOs are eligible for grants from the Balkan Incentive Fund for Culture, part of the European Cultural Foundation (ECF).
The foundation offers grants of up to EU€30,000 (about US$37,800) with support from Hivos and the Open Society Institute. The average grant ranges from EU€10,000 to €15,000.
The fund focuses specifically on the Western Balkans: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo. Among the projects that the grant covers are: media initiatives, seminars, training, capacity building, cultural research, and artistic projects.

Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Scholarship Fund

The United Nations sponsors the Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Scholarship Fund for young, working journalists to come to New York to report on General Assembly sessions for their home new media from mid-September to mid-December. The application deadline is April 15.
Journalists from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America between the ages of 25 and 35 who are currently full-time employees of a newspaper or broadcast news service with an excellent level of English are eligible to apply. The fellowship includes round-trip airfare to New York City, room and board, health insurance and a small stipend for basic expenses. Successful applicants must obtain a leave of absence from their employers.
The fellowship was established in honor of Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish diplomat and economist who served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death in 1961.

Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program

This fellowship program selects professionals from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Russia to study for a master’s or doctorate degree for one to three years at the university of their choice. Candidates are selected based on their leadership skills, academic performance and commitment to community or national service. Among the study topics are media, governance and civil society.
Applicants must present a proposed plan specifying how they will use their studies to change a social problem in their home country and then commit themselves to work on that issue during the fellowship.
The fellowships are administered annually by the Ford Foundation, an independent foundation that works to strengthen democratic values and reduce poverty and injustice, among other goals.

The Open Society Institute’s International Policy Fellowship is a one-year research grant for specific study on an issue related to open society goals and those projects OSI currently funds. Professionals working for an NGO, policymaking body, or academic institution who have an excellent command of English and are permanent residents of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa or Asia are eligible to apply.
The fellowship includes travel to Budapest, Hungary for orientation at the beginning of the project in April, supervision and support from a senior policy analyst, a monthly stipend for expenses, and reimbursement for research-related expenses like travel, communication, publication and advocacy costs.

James V. Ongpin Awards

The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility in the Philippines organizes the James V. Ongpin Awards for in-depth journalism. There are two categories: investigative and explanatory.

Prabha Dutt Fellowship

The Prabha Dutt fellowship offers young and mid-career print journalists from India a grant of INR60,000 (about US$1,280) to conduct in-depth research and investigative stories in Hindi, English or any regional language. The results can be published as a series of reports or a book within 10 months of the initial award.
The Sanskriti Foundation offers the fellowship each year in honor of late journalist Prabha Dutt, who worked for the Hindustan Times and India Today.
